I hope you are safe and dry as Vermont continues to recover from devastating floods. Most of the Addison District was fortunate to escape major flood damage, but there were many homes, commercial buildings, farms, and public infrastructure that did sustain damage, including several that were completely destroyed. While the damage in other Vermont counties resulted in nearly immediate eligibility for FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) assistance, the total damage in Addison County has not yet added up to the amount necessary to qualify. If Addison County does not meet the FEMA threshold, even people whose property sustained significant damage would not get federal assistance.
We want our friends and neighbors to get the help they need, so please report any damage to your property, however minor, so it can be added to the FEMA tally for Addison County. Report damage to Vermont211.org, using the online form. Any damage counts – a washed out driveway; a flooded shed, barn, or garage; damaged equipment; water in the basement of a home or business, etc. Even if you think your property damage is not that bad or you already fixed it, we need your help so neighbors with major damage can get FEMA assistance.
If you need assistance with flood recovery, the State of Vermont has now compiled a comprehensive website, the Vermont Flood Resources, Assistance, and Referrals. It contains information in 10 languages with links and referral assistance for essential needs and services, damage and disaster relief, and ways to help with flood recovery. You can also refer to the list I compiled two weeks ago, which has direct links to many resources.
If you are able to donate or volunteer for flood relief efforts, you can register to volunteer to help support Vermonters affected by flooding or make a donation to the Vermont Community Foundation VT Flood Response & Recovery Fund. In addition, there are many specific fundraising efforts, including a GoFundMe fundraiser for the Poploski Family in Ripton who lost their entire home in a terrifying landslide.
Thank you for all of your efforts. Please reach out if you have questions or need help.
