A Remarkable Young Woman’s Perspective

This post was written by one of my summer interns, Quincy Sabick, who grew up in Vergennes and graduated from Vergennes Union High School in June. Quincy spent the summer with me knocking on doors, attending events, and doing whatever tasks our campaign needed, while also working as a summer camp counselor and a barista at a local cafe. Quincy is a remarkable young woman and an incredibly helpful member of our summer team. I am honored that she wrote this post just before she packed up to start her first year of college. It first appeared as a letter to the editor of the Addison Independent under the title “Ruth Hardy truly listens & connects.” Thank you, Quincy!

It was a cold January day when I first formally met Senator Ruth Hardy. After hearing of my interest in politics and policymaking, she invited me to shadow her for a day at the Statehouse to get an inside look at committee meetings and daily proceedings. I was struck by Ruth’s ability to find common ground, stand firm on her values and ask important questions, so when Ruth asked if I’d like to intern on her campaign the following summer, I enthusiastically agreed.

In June, Ruth launched her reelection campaign alongside Hannah Sessions, a political newcomer running for the second Addison District Senate seat. Hannah brings the professional perspective of a farmer and business owner as well as a strong sense of integrity and a love for Addison County. Since the campaigns launched in June, it’s safe to say we’ve covered a lot of ground: knocking on hundreds of doors, attending dozens of events and all the while carefully listening to the concerns of every constituent met along the way.

Where Ruth’s skills really shine is in the conversations we have while canvassing. She starts with a question: “What concerns do you have about Vermont?” This is usually met with several of the same answers. Property taxes, public education, affordable housing and frustration with the federal administration especially stand out. I found myself continuously impressed at Ruth’s expertise on a wide range of issues that allows her to explain complicated procedures in an accessible way, connect people with resources or inform them on new initiatives. Her honesty and openness allow her to connect with people all across the political spectrum and show them her commitment to supporting all Vermonters.

Ruth has already demonstrated this commitment in the Senate for the past eight years. She is responsive to constituents, never compromises on her values and shows up every day ready to engage in meaningful conversations about policy. This is exactly the attitude and work ethic we need all of our legislators to bring. The future of our state relies on the people electing officials who are focused on creating effective policy and an equitable future rather than those who choose to dehumanize Vermonters and prioritize their own gains. Growing up in Addison County has shown me the unique qualities that make this district so special, but also that we are not immune to the problems plaguing our state and nation. In her time in the legislature Ruth has been a leading voice in fighting for affordability, women’s rights, local voice in public education and responsible stewardship of natural resources, and will continue to advocate for these issues if reelected.

All along the campaign trail a common message has arisen: Vermonters are fed up with politicians. What they want instead is someone who can seek out new perspectives to understand real issues and take concrete steps to address the most pressing concerns in difficult times. To me, Ruth Hardy exemplifies these traits in every way. She brings the knowledge and intellect of a policy expert as well as the compassion and understanding of a mother and community member. I am proud to say I will be casting my ballot for Ruth Hardy and Hannah Sessions on Nov. 3, and I encourage you to do the same.
